Top 10 Ways to Improve Your Skin’s Appearance

Pro Secrets to Beautiful Skin | An Interview with Judi Atkinson, Para Medical Aesthetician, Coastal Cosmetic Center

Medical Spa (MedSpa) in Jacksonville & Fleming Island, FLAre you concerned about your skin’s appearance? Have you ever wondered if there is more you can do to appear healthier and younger? In this article Coastal Cosmetic Center’s Para Medical Aesthetician, Judi Atkinson provides insight into the steps you can take to improve your skin’s appearance.

1. Avoid sun exposure and use sunscreen.

Wearing sunscreen is the most important thing you can do to improve your skin’s appearance since 90% of all aging skin problems are caused by the sun. Judi says, “Use your sunscreen daily. Make it part of your routine because it’s not the occasional day of laying out at the beach that gets you—it’s the everyday sun exposure that does.”

2. Use medical grade skin products.

“Over the counter skin products are purely cosmetic and have different pH levels than what your skin needs. OTC products generally have a pH of 7, while your skin has pH of 4.5. So, OTC products do nothing but sit on top of the skin and hydrate dead tissue,” said Judi.

 3. Maintain your youthful appearance with regular facials.

Getting regular facials is not just a relaxing treat. Judi recommends getting a facial at least four times a year to promote cell turnover. However getting a facial once a month would be ideal.

4. Consult with your aesthetician to see if you are a candidate for chemical peel.

Not everyone is a candidate for chemical peels. Pregnant women and patients with certain medical conditions should avoid them. However, for the right people, chemical peels enhance cell renewal, minimize fine lines and wrinkles and even skin tone. Ask your aesthetician if chemical peels are right for you.

5. Drink 8 glasses of water per day.

Drinking eight 8 ounce glasses of water per day can help your skin hydrate from the inside out.

6. Get plenty of rest and 7-8 hours of sleep per night.

The first place tiredness will show is on your face. So be sure to get at least 7-8 hours of sleep per night to feel your best and appear youthful.

7. Eat a healthy diet.

Your mom was right! Eat your vegetables! Natural foods like fruits and vegetables with lots of color and beta carotene are vital to maintaining your skin’s youthful appearance.

8. Take time to enjoy life and reduce stress.

Stress reduces your immune system response and is not healthy. Take small amounts of time each day to rest and reduce stress.

9. Exfoliate regularly.

“Watch for OTC exfoliants that have large grain size. Some popular drug store ‘apricot’ exfoliants can actually do more damage than good,” said Judy. “Use exfoliants that are microbeads. Skinceuticals has a great product line that contains all the proper ingredients.”

10. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize!

Even oily skin needs moisture. Judy recommends, “Ask your aesthetician to choose a moisturizer that’s proper for your skin. There are three to choose from: oily skin care, daily renewal and dry skin care.”
