Blepharoplasty vs. Ptosis Surgery

Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery) in Jacksonville & Fleming Island, FLMany patients that approach surgeons with a desire to undergo an eyelid lift are commonly confused as to what the procedure specifically entails. The eyelid lift is an umbrella term that describes different surgeries that are designed to improve the overall appearance of the eyelids. Although blepharoplasty and ptosis surgery are both successful in achieving this goal, they are different forms of eyelid surgery that correct problems with different causes. Therefore, it is important to understand what each procedure entails in order to determine if blepharoplasty, ptosis repair, or both are right for you.

Blepharoplasty

As we age, the skin on our eyelids may thin out, causing a sagging or drooping appearance. The fat surrounding the eye may also bulge out, causing bags. A blepharoplasty procedure can help improve this aspect of someone’s appearance by trimming excess skin and fat surrounding the eye through a small incision hidden in the crease of the eyelid. The result is reduced undesired fullness and elimination of overhang on eyelashes.

Ptosis Surgery

Ptosis refers to a condition where the eyelid is placed too low. In contrast to blepharoplasty, it has little to do with the skin but with the position of the edge of the eyelid. To correct this, a specialized surgeon will lift the eyelids by readjusting the eyelid muscle tendons that have been overstretched. Where blepharoplasty can improve eyelid appearance by removing extra tissue, ptosis surgery may do the same by setting the eyelid height and both surgeries can be done at the same time for optimal results if needed.

Common Advantages

Although these two procedures are different in nature and in what they correct, there are several shared advantages, such as:

  • An improvement in vision and physical appearance
  • Low-risk surgeries suitable for patients of all ages
  • May be covered by insurance
  • Can be performed in an operating room or an office
