Breast reconstruction is an extremely common, safe and effective procedure. However, as with anything popular, there are many myths regarding what the procedure entails and what patients can expect. To help set your mind at ease, here are some of the most common breast reconstruction myths debunked.
Myth: Immediate Reconstruction Isn’t Possible
Immediate reconstruction is absolutely an option for many women. In fact, performing reconstruction at the same time as the mastectomy helps to reduce scarring and save the natural skin of the breast. Additionally, many women find comfort in avoiding the experience of living without one or both breasts for any period of time, by having the reconstruction and mastectomy performed at the same time. The best way to determine if you are a candidate for immediate reconstruction is to speak with your surgeon.
Myth: Radiation Interferes With Breast Reconstruction
Breast reconstruction is an option, regardless of whether you have had radiation. That being said, the surgery may require a different approach, to ensure best results. For many patients, it is best to schedule reconstruction after the mastectomy and radiation are complete. However, we recommend speaking with your surgeon to better understand your unique timeline.
Myth: Breast Reconstruction Must Involve Implants
The good news is that there are countless ways to reconstruct the breast–implants are just one of them. Many patients opt for microsurgical breast reconstruction. This approach uses tissue from another area on the body, such as the tummy or thighs, to perform the reconstruction. This results in a breast that often feels softer and more natural.
Myth: Breast Reconstruction Is Too Expensive
The cost of each breast reconstruction procedure is calculated on an individual basis. This allows us to tailor the procedure to your specific needs so that you can achieve the results you deserve. The details of your reconstruction cost can be discussed during your consultation, so you can gain a deeper understanding of your projected investment.
