Breast augmentation surgery can be one of the biggest decisions you make. As a result, it only makes sense that you would expect the outcome to be flawless. However, some patients find that, as time goes by, they are less satisfied with their new body than they had hoped. The good news is that breast revision surgery is available, to help you finally achieve the results you are seeking. Here are five of the most common reasons for breast revision surgery:
One of the more well-known problems with breast implants is capsular contracture. When this occurs, the body creates a capsule around the implant, effectively protecting the rest of the body from what has been identified as a foreign object. Signs of capsular contracture are that the breast feels very firm and no longer moves naturally.
Although implants are designed to last for the long-term, it is possible for them to break. Events such as trauma to the chest, or even excessive handling during surgery can increase the risk of leakage. Depending on the type of implant you’ve chosen, the plan of action will vary. Those with saline implants will notice the breast has deflated. However, those will silicone implants may require a scan to confirm the leakage. Regardless of the cause, a rupture is an important issue that should be addressed as quickly as possible.
Another rare but possible negative side effect is rippling or wrinkling of the skin. This tends to be most noticeable in patients who are very thin or who have very thin skin. In this case, revision may require sizing down to create breasts that can be better supported by the patient’s body.
In the case that an implant is too large or was misplaced during the initial surgery, the patient may notice her implants have drifted south, towards the breast crease. Not only does this present an aesthetic challenge, but it will require surgical intervention to correct.
Implants are inserted at a single moment in time. However, after the implants are in, life continues to happen. As it does, some patients realize that a different breast size would better suit their current place in life.
Just as each breast augmentation is unique, the reasons for breast revision surgery are just as varied.
