Dermaplaning vs. Shaving: Pros and Cons
By Coastal Cosmetic | Sep 15, 2019 | Blog, Skin Care
Hair removal is one of the cosmetic world’s oldest practices. As the years have passed, many trends including shaving, waxing, or hair removal creams have proven to be effective in removing unwanted hair, but with their own risks and downsides. Dermaplaning is the newest breakthrough in hair removal technology, which specifically benefits women that are looking to remove the soft vellus hair or “peach fuzz” on their faces. As with any other hair removal trend, dermaplaning comes with its own list of pros and cons, so we have provided a few for you to consider and compare how it measures up to traditional shaving.
Pro: Dermaplaning Doesn’t Just Remove Hair
During the dermaplaning treatment, a licensed skin professional will use a surgical blade to strip the fine hairs off the face along with the outer layer of skin. Although shaving does exfoliate the skin to a degree, the level of exfoliation is much greater in a dermaplaning treatment because the skin professional can control how deep to plane the skin. This is a great alternative for those that desire a deep exfoliation along with hair removal but experience adverse reactions when using normal peeling agents on their skin.
Con: A Pricier Method of Hair Removal
As you may have guessed, the cost of a dermaplaning treatment in a doctor’s office is likely to be higher than that of your at-home shave. This is because the procedure requires a licensed professional to perform it and a special instrument to deeply exfoliate the skin and trigger new cell regeneration. A typical dermaplaning session can run anywhere from $75 to $150 and up. Although this may seem like a staggering difference in price in comparison to razors, the costs may be slightly offset by the fact that dermaplaning requires fewer touch-up sessions than shaving does.
Pro: Softer Hair Re-Growth
The biggest complaint many women have with using a razor is that hair seems to grow back darker and thicker. This is because regular razors cut the hair at a blunt angle, which can lead to ingrown hairs, razor burn, and uncomfortable stubble. In contrast, dermaplaning provides a much closer shave than a razor would and cuts the hair at the perfect angle to allow it to grow back softer than before. This is ideal for women that are looking to soften their facial features by removing any peach fuzz without having to worry about hair growing back more noticeably.
