Laser hair removal is a popular procedure for men and women looking to have perfectly smooth skin without having to set aside time with some shaving cream and a razor. Because laser hair removal is such a popular procedure, there are a lot of misconceptions about it as well. We wanted to clear up where lines have been blurred and bust the top five myths about laser hair removal.
MYTH #1: Laser Hair Removal Removes All of Your Hair
People who are considering laser hair removal often think that they’re going to come out on the other side completely hair-free. The reality of the situation is laser hair removal should really be called “laser hair reduction.” This is because laser hair removal typically gets rid of about 90 percent of hair from the treated area. While most patients are happy with the amount of hair removed and no longer need to shave or wax the area, if you’re expecting a 100 percent removal of your body hair, you may want to look into a different treatment.
MYTH #2: Just One Treatment Will Give You Your Desired Results
Laser hair removal isn’t a one-and-done treatment. That being said, it only takes about four to six treatments to get your desired results. Each laser hair removal treatment typically takes under an hour to complete, and appointments may be spaced just one to two weeks apart. In reality, in just six to eight weeks, you can expect a permanent reduction of hair in your treated area. Not bad, right?
MYTH #3: Laser Hair Removal Works for Everyone
Laser hair removal is ideal for patients who have a lighter skin tone and darker colored hair. This is because the contrast in color can help the laser and laser technician determine the difference between the skin and the hair follicle. Patients who have a deeper skin tone with naturally dark hair, or lighter skin tone with naturally light hair, may not benefit from laser hair removal in the same way as someone with a stark contrast to the color of their hair and skin. To see if laser hair removal is right for you, we urge you to schedule a consultation with Dr. Fee and his team of aestheticians.
MYTH #4: Laser Hair Removal Isn’t Worth the Investment
Let’s be honest – razors, shaving creams, post-shave balms, and waxing sessions are not cheap. All of these personal grooming habits come at quite the cost, and with laser hair removal treatments, these costs can be significantly reduced or completely eliminated. Aside from the financial cost, our patients are thrilled with the amount of time and energy they save not having to worry about shaving to go to the beach, for big events, for date nights, or just for their everyday routines. Our patients rave over the investment they made with laser hair removal.
MYTH #5: All Lasers Work the Same
Like most things, not all lasers are created equal. Different lasers have different jobs, and some do their jobs better than others. It’s important you do your research about which lasers may be best for you before scheduling your laser hair removal treatments. Dr. Fee can go over the type of laser he uses and its benefits during your one-on-one consultation. Remember, it’s okay to ask questions – in fact, we encourage it!
