How Long Do Botox® Results Last?
The answer, as with many other questions, is that it can depend. There are many factors that affect how long the results of your Botox® treatment will last, such as the dilution of your dosage, the freshness of the product, your metabolism, and the area being injected. As a first-time patient, it is important to keep in mind that Botox® works best after multiple treatments when your muscles become conditioned and respond to the botulinum toxin. Therefore, it is important not to expect dramatic, long-lasting results until your facial muscles become accustomed to the product over regular dosages. When injected for cosmetic purposes, the effects of Botox® will last for an estimated four to six months, however, expect to schedule your second appointment two to three months following your first treatment for the reasons aforementioned.
How to Make Your Botox® Results Last Longer
While your Botox® treatment sadly has an expiration date, there are several steps you can take to prolong the results of your treatment and prevent the formation of new wrinkles. These include:
- Avoid the sun on the day of your treatment as exposure to the sun may cause your blood vessels to dilate, resulting in a faster spread of the Botox® treatment than normal. It is also advised to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful and skin-aging rays daily by using sunscreen.
- Get Botox® treatments regularly. If your future treatments occur at regular intervals, your muscles will continue to get shorter and smaller over time. This will result in you needing treatments at a lower frequency in the future.
- Make sure to choose a board-certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon that is skilled in providing Botox® treatment. Putting a needle in the hands of an inexperienced injector can leave you with less than optimal results or side effects if it is improperly injected.
