Puberty is often seen as a rite of passage into adulthood, but for some may also be a challenging time period. As the body undergoes changes, many teenagers experience embarrassment as some of these changes can be painful or uncomfortable. One such example is the irritating acne that is stereotypical of puberty. And while all things eventually come to an end, many are left with pockmarks and scars that continue to remind them of this trying time. There is hope, however, as laser skin resurfacing treatments are a promising solution to improve the look of even the severest of acne scars.
Laser skin resurfacing is a minimally invasive procedure that improves the skin’s tone and texture and can provide mild skin tightening. It uses a wand-like laser instrument to strip the upper layers of skin damaged from acne scarring to reveal the newer, more youthful layer of skin underneath. The procedure can either be performed by a carbon dioxide laser or Palomar’s fractional laser.
Apart from improving the look of acne scars, laser skin resurfacing is useful in improving skin texture, sun damage, pore size, stretch marks and other scars in just one treatment. The procedure also heats the underlying skin layers to stimulate collagen production, which results in a smoother, more even appearance after the treatment area has healed. As with any other treatment, however, there are some risks to consider. These may include pain, swelling, bleeding, scarring, crusting, discoloration, or infection in the treated area.
Anyone with acne scars or other skin flaws and realistic goals may be a good candidate for laser skin resurfacing. Other factors to consider include skin type, skin tone, and certain medical conditions. In general, those with lighter skin tones are better candidates for this procedure than those with darker skin tones as there is less risk of permanent skin discoloration. The ideal candidate has elastic, non-oily skin that is not prone to scarring after minor injury. If the degree of skin damage is minor, it may be recommended to seek gentler treatments as laser skin resurfacing may actually worsen the condition of the skin.
