What Is Liposuction?

Liposuction, also known as “Lipo”, “Suction-Assisted Lipectomy”, or “Lipoplasty”, targets unwanted fatty areas of the body that have become resistant to diet and exercise. We offer several types of liposuction in Jacksonville, including:

  • Liposuction: Traditional liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes excess fat from various parts of the body using a cannula, a long, thin metal tube. This allows fat removal from many areas of the body through a tiny incision rather than a larger incision to directly excise the fatty tissue.
  • VASERLipo®: VASERLipo® is a minimally invasive liposuction procedure that uses ultrasound technology to precisely contour the body by eliminating excess fat. It allows fewer passes with the cannula to melt the tissue holding the fat together. This allows the cannula to suction the fat with fewer passes, often resulting in a shorter surgery time.
  • Lipo 360: Lipo 360 is quickly becoming a popular liposuction option. Using various liposuction cannula sizes and types, the fat is suctioned out of multiple parts of the body in order to produce a circumferential slimming effect. It is a more advanced procedure than traditional liposuction, as it does not just treat one specific area but treats multiple areas at once, resulting in excessive body contouring. In order to produce the best aesthetic outcome, your Plastic Surgeon develops a comprehensive plan based on your specific body type and the knowledge of the underlying anatomy, like the muscles, bones, and internal structure of the body.

What Are the Benefits of Liposuction?

Liposuction is a safe and effective treatment for the removal of localized fatty deposits that have proven resistant to even the best efforts at diet and exercise. Lipo and VASERLipo® also:

  • Remove large amounts of fat
  • Improve body contour
  • Help to smooth out skin and define muscles

Who Is an Ideal Candidate for Liposuction?

If you have stubborn areas of fat that have proven resistant to your best efforts at diet and exercise, then you may be a great candidate for Liposuction, VASERLipo®, or a Lipo 360 procedure.

Am I a Candidate for BodyTite® or FaceTite® combined with Liposuction?

We get asked this question frequently. While liposuction can be performed almost anywhere on the body where there is excess fat, there often is a separate problem of loose skin. If skin laxity is present to a certain degree, you may benefit from having FaceTite® or BodyTite® in combination with your liposuction procedure. The liposuction aspect of the procedure removes the fat under the skin, and the BodyTite® or FaceTite® utilizes radiofrequency waves to help tighten the skin layers for an optimal aesthetic appearance.

How Is Liposuction Performed?

During the procedure, the surgeon makes a small incision in the targeted area for improvement and inserts a small metal cannula to suction away unwanted fatty tissue and cells. Depending on the degree of fat requiring treatment and the number of areas being treated, patients can expect to be in surgery for at least two hours.

Where Are Liposuction Procedures Performed?

Lipo takes place on an outpatient basis, under general anesthesia, at our on-site licensed ambulatory surgery center, Coastal Surgery Center. It is a Medicare-certified and state-licensed ambulatory surgery center that is accredited by The Joint Commission and licensed by the Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA).

What Is the Recovery for Liposuction?

Liposuction in Jacksonville and St. Johns, FL, should only be scheduled when patients have allotted a suitable amount of post-operative time for healing and recovery. Depending on the physical demands of employment, liposuction candidates should plan for anywhere between one and three weeks off from work, coupled with a lifting restriction of 10 pounds for three weeks post-surgery. Expected side effects are temporary and include swelling, burning, numbness, bruising, and soreness. VASERLipo® is less invasive and has a quicker recovery period. Liposuction 360 is often more extensive and requires a slightly longer recovery period.

How Much Does Liposuction Cost?

Liposuction surgery costs vary between patients. This is based on the type of liposuction being performed and the number of areas being treated. Furthermore, sometimes Liposuction is combined with BodyTite® or FaceTite® for optimal results, and this will slightly increase the cost as well. After your personal consultation with your Plastic Surgeon, a specific breakdown of all applicable costs for your procedure will be discussed. For over 28 years, Coastal Cosmetic Center, currently led by expert plastic surgeons Timothy E. Fee, MD, and Jordan A. Bilezikian, MD, has proudly served patients in Jacksonville, St. Johns, and all Northeast Florida regions, including Nocatee, Ponte Vedra Beach, Fleming Island, and Fruit Cove/Julington Creek.
