Does Breast Implant Surveillance Replace My Routine Breast Imaging?

Breast implant surveillance is specifically a breast implant screening tool for potential complications such as implant rupture, leakage, or capsule complications. This imaging modality, although convenient and accurate, does not replace your routine breast imaging, either for your breast tissue or your breast implants.

For average-risk women in the U.S., screening Mammograms typically begin between ages 40 and 50, with ongoing screening every 1–2 years until at least age 74. If you have higher risk factors, you may need to start earlier and/or have additional tests such as an MRI. For breast implants, the current FDA recommendations are to begin screening 5-6 years after implantation and then every 2-3 years after that with either MRI or ultrasound.

What if Breast Implant Surveillance Detects a Silent Rupture?
