Did you know that 12 percent of Americans suffer from migraines? A migraine is a severe type of headache that also causes neurological symptoms such as nausea, and visual disturbances. Migraines can be incapacitating, sometimes lasting up to 72 hours or longer and negatively impacting a person’s ability to work, socialize and function normally.
Some symptoms of a migraine attack include:
Those whose migraines are unresponsive to traditional medical or pharmacological therapy or lifestyle changes may be interested in learning can surgery cure migraine headaches.
Much about the cause of migraines still isn’t understood, but genetics and environmental factors appear to play a role. Migraines could be a result of changes in the brainstem. Imbalances in brain chemicals, such as serotonin, may also may be involved. Common migraine triggers include hormonal changes in women, food and food additives, alcoholic beverages, sensory stimuli, stress, changes in the environment, medications, and changes in sleep patterns.
MIgraines can be treated with a number of varying options from lifestyle changes to non-surgical medical treatments to even surgery.
According to the American Migraine Center, a Cleveland doctor discovered the benefits of forehead rejuvenation surgery in a patient with migraines. In a follow-up, the patient claimed she hadn’t had a migraine headache for six months. The early finding from reconstructive surgery, and then the use of BOTOX to help pinpoint the source of migraines, helped find and quell migraine trigger points.
The Louisiana University State Health Science Center’s research team found that, in a select group of patients, incisions through the upper eyelid resulted in equally effective release and deactivation of the nerves involved in migraines.
Migraine surgery is performed on an outpatient basis with sedation and/or general anesthesia. It takes approximately 45 minutes to an hour to deactivate each trigger point. This could involve removing a small portion of the muscle that is pinching the cranial nerves, or correcting a deviated septum that is protruding into the other structures and compressing the nerves.
