What is Otoplasty?
Otoplasty, or ear surgery, is a procedure to resize or reshape the ears. Ear surgery is often performed on children and younger adults to correct protruding ears, which can result in bullying or teasing. Adults also seek otoplasty to correct ears that have been deformed or damaged due to an accident or trauma.
What Are the Benefits of Otoplasty?
Ear surgery creates a natural shape, while bringing balance and proportion to the ears and face. Correction of even minor deformities can have profound benefits to your appearance and self-esteem.
Who is an Ideal Candidate for Otoplasty?
If protruding or disfigured ears bother you or your child, you or they may be an ideal candidate for ear surgery. Candidates should be in good health and have mature ears, which generally occurs by age five. All candidates should have realistic goals for ear surgery.
What is the Procedure for Otoplasty?
All ear surgeries are conducted on an outpatient basis at the Coastal Cosmetic Center’s nationally accredited on-site surgery facility, Coastal Surgery Center, in Jacksonville, FL. Prior to surgery, anesthesia is administered for your comfort during the surgical procedure. The choices include local intravenous sedation, or general anesthesia. Dr. Fee will recommend the best choice for you. Correction of protruding ears uses surgical techniques to create or increase the antihelical fold (just inside the rim of the ear) and to reduce enlarged conchal cartilage (the largest and deepest concavity of the external ear). Incisions for otoplasty are generally made on the back surface of the ear. When incisions are necessary on the front of the ear, Dr. Fee makes them within the folds to hide them. Internal, non-removable sutures are used to create and secure the newly shaped cartilage in place.
What is the Recovery for Otoplasty?
Discomfort immediately following ear surgery is normal and can be controlled with pain medication. There may be an itchy feeling under bandages. It is essential that bandages remain intact and are not removed for any reason. Failure to do so may result in loss of some of the correction and may require a secondary surgery.
