Dermaplaning vs. Microdermabrasion: Which is Better?

Dermaplaning in Jacksonville & Fleming Island, FLDermaplaning and microdermabrasion sound pretty similar and tend to have similar techniques, but many of our patients come in confused about the difference between the two. Today, we wanted to go over the differences between the two exfoliation treatments and how each can benefit you in different situations.

What is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a method of gentle skin exfoliation. During your dermaplaning treatment, Dr. Fee will remove your outermost layer of skin using a special razor edge. By getting rid of this layer of skin, you are also getting rid of the layer of dead skin cells on the top of your face, revealing healthier, more vibrant skin underneath. Dermaplaning treatments also help prepare the skin for deeper exfoliation treatments like chemical peels. Combing a chemical peel with your dermaplaning treatment allows for the ultimate exfoliation experience to provide a beautiful, even complexion.

What are the Benefits of Dermaplaning?

There are many benefits to receiving dermaplaning treatments, including:
• Removes peach fuzz from the face
• Removes dead skin cells covering the face
• Non-invasive treatment
• No downtime or recovery period necessary
• Prepares skin for later treatments
• Minimizes pore size

What is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is another exfoliating procedure. While dermaplaning focuses on just the outermost layers of the skin using a razor tool, microdermabrasion uses a microcrystal spray or ultrasonic technology to exfoliate skin on a deeper level. In addition to addressing clogged pores and dead skin cells covering the face, microdermabrasion also addresses sun damage, fine lines, wrinkles, and collagen production. This treatment is also great to prepare the skin for further exfoliation procedures like chemical peels.

What are the Benefits of Microdermabrasion?

There are many benefits to getting microdermabrasion treatments, including:
• Improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
• Evens out hyperpigmentation or uneven skin tone
• Removes dead cells from the surface of the skin
• Addresses large, clogged pores
• May improve the appearance of scarring over time
• Minimally invasive treatment

Is Dermaplaning or Microdermabrasion Better for Me?

The answer to this question depends on the extent of exfoliation you’re looking for. If you’re looking for a mild exfoliation that will rid your face of dead skin cells and peach fuzz, dermaplaning may be right for you. However, if you’re looking for a deeper exfoliation to help improve the appearance of your fine lines, wrinkles, and scarring, microdermabrasion may be right for you.
